What is an eVisa?

An eVisa is a digital record of your UK immigration status. Unlike the old Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) card, there is no physical card. Your visa is linked electronically to your passport and accessed through your UKVI online account.

How to set up your eVisa — step by step

Step 1 — Create a UKVI account

Go to gov.uk/evisa and create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account. You'll need a valid email address.

Step 2 — Download the ID Check app

Download the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app from the App Store or Google Play. This app is used to verify your identity and link your passport to your UKVI account.

Step 3 — Verify your identity

Open the app and follow the prompts. You'll scan your passport chip with your phone's NFC reader, then complete a facial recognition check. This takes about 5 minutes.

Step 4 — Access your eVisa

Once verified, log in to your UKVI account on gov.uk. Your eVisa will show your visa type, expiry date, and conditions (e.g. work restrictions).

What is a Share Code?

A Share Code is a 9-character code that allows you to share your immigration status with someone else — for example, an employer, landlord, or university. There are three types:

• Right to work — for employers when you start a job
• Right to rent — for landlords before moving into rented accommodation
• Proving immigration status — for universities and other organisations

How to generate a Share Code

Log in to your UKVI account at gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status. Select the type of Share Code you need. A 9-character code will be generated — it is valid for 90 days and can only be used once.

• Generate a new Share Code for each employer, landlord or institution
• Never share a code that has already been used
• Codes expire after 90 days — generate a new one if needed

Frequently asked questions

What if I have an old BRP card?

BRP cards issued before 31 December 2024 are no longer valid as proof of immigration status. You must use your eVisa instead. If you don't yet have a UKVI account, set one up at gov.uk/evisa immediately.

Do I need my eVisa to travel?

Your passport remains your main travel document. The eVisa is linked to your passport electronically — immigration officers at the border can see your status by scanning your passport. You do not need to show anything extra.

Can I use a different passport after getting an eVisa?

If you get a new passport, you must update your UKVI account to link your eVisa to the new passport before travelling internationally.
